James Simpson is a founder and managing director with Wood Partners. He is responsible for running operations along the eastern seaboard from Massachusetts to Florida, as well as the Midwest. Through its offices in Miami, Orlando, Atlanta, Charlotte, Durham, Washington and Boston, Wood Partners has started more than 25,000 apartment homes for its own account and has constructed almost 1,200 additional apartment homes for third-parties. The properties developed or built by Wood Partners from these offices have a combined value of more than $3.3 billion.

Prior to helping form Wood Partners in 1998, Simpson spent 14 years with Trammell Crow Residential, where he opened its Charlotte office in 1984. He began his career in real estate with First Union National Bank (now Wells Fargo), after serving a tour as a line officer in the U.S. Navy.

Simpson holds a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina State University and an MBA degree from the University of North Carolina's Kenan-Flagler Business School. Simpson has served as Board Member and President of the Charlotte Apartment Association and Board Member of the Apartment Association of North Carolina. He now serves on the Multifamily Leadership Board of the National Association of Homebuilders and is Chairman of the Board of Directors of The Housing Partnership, a non-profit organization based in Charlotte.
